I’m excited to share the story behind my latest creation—a pretty, heartfelt art canvas that came to life with just a quick trip to the dollar store and some quick thinking! This project technique, featured in my Father’s Day segment on Today in Nashville, is proof that you don’t need a big budget to make something truly special.
With only one day’s notice to design four projects for the show, I was in a bit of a pinch. But a quick stop at the dollar store sparked a wave of inspiration. Among the aisles, I spotted the oversized “poster” stickers and instantly knew they’d be the star of a fun, kid-friendly canvas project. The result? A “BEST DAD” canvas (check it out at the bottom of this post!) that’s as meaningful as it is budget-friendly.
When I started playing with my sample, I hit a little snag – the rolled-on paint was seeping under the stickers, creating a bit of a mess. But here’s where the magic happened! A quick swipe with a damp cotton swab cleaned up the edges and, to my delight, gave the lettering a pretty watercolor-like effect. What started as a “whoops” moment turned into my favorite part of the project! I love those unexpected sparks of creativity that remind me why I adore crafting.
To make sure this happy accident wasn’t a one-time fluke, I tested the technique again during my Cool2Craft Pajama Party LIVE this week, creating a colorful “PRAISE” canvas. It worked like a charm, and now I can’t wait to try it on an even bigger canvas. The best part? This project is so easy that kids can join in, making it a perfect way to create lasting memories with the whole family.
So, next time you’re at the dollar store, grab some poster stickers, foam paint roller and a canvas, and let your imagination run wild. You never know what thrifty treasure you’ll uncover! I can’t wait to see what you create—share your projects with me, and let’s keep the crafting love going!

Materials
Canvas (8 x 10)
Paint (4 – 5 complementary colors of your choice plus white)
Foam paint roller
Poster stickers
Cotton swabs (ends dipped in water)
Stiff brush (to spatter paint)

Press poster stickers onto canvas. Rub along all edges of the stickers to encourage them to stick firmly to the canvas.

Drizzle lines of paint onto the canvas. Roll with foam roller to apply paint to canvas.

You will only need to roll over the paint one or two times to start blending the colors. If needed, add more paint and continue to roll until you have desired paint pattern and blending.

While the paint is still wet, remove the stickers. As you can see, there was a lot of seeping of paint under the stickers on this canvas.

While paint is still wet, dip cotton swab into water and start dragging along the edge of the lettering. You will begin to get a watercolor paint effect as you shift, lift and move the paint. Use a clean damp cotton swab for each letter.

The final effect is a wash of color inside the lettering. If desired, continue to move and shift paint but don’t over do it! This technique is supposed to look very hand-painted! If desired, before or after you remove the stickers, you can spatter your artwork with white paint. Hang and enjoy!
