There’s something so joyful about layering colors and textures to create a piece that feels full of life and meaning. For this project, I reached for my watercolors to paint a series of vibrant, overlapping hearts. To give them extra detail, I added black marker lines, then finished the piece by stamping the letters L-O-V-E and gluing in place. The final touch? A shimmering gold frame that makes the whole artwork glow with warmth and elegance. This project is simple yet powerful—a celebration of love, color, and creativity.

MATERIALS

Watercolors
Watercolor paper
Brush & water
Micron Black Pen .05
Pencil
Scissors
Aleene’s Tacky Glue
Frame (I purchased from Dollar Tree)
Optional: Alphabet rubber stamps or alphabet stickers

A watercolor palette with various colors placed on a wet watercolor paper background showing blended hues of blue, green, and purple.

Brush water onto your paper from edge to edge. Dip brush in water and swirl onto watercolor of your choice to pick up color on the brush. Draw brush across paper in small sections. Repeat to cover the entire paper with a rainbow of colors. Let dry.

The wood grain background look is created in the same way with lines of color. I also used a dry background technique for some of the lines of colors which gives you a crisp line. Let dry and then cut to the size of your frame.

Select a heart pattern of your choice. Hand sketch or transfer largest heart onto colorful paper with pencil. (Largest heart will depend on the size of your frame.) Cut inside the pattern line (so that you don’t have to erase the pencil later.)

Using your large heart for the pattern for the next layer, cut away more along the edge so that each heart layer is smaller and smaller. Repeat to create 4 layers of hearts.

Cut strip for stem and two leaves from your colorful paper.

Use black pen to draw lines along edges of 3 hearts and stitch line (dashes) on the smallest heart.

On stem, outline along the edges and then draw a box within a box pattern inside the edge lines. For leaves, draw along the edges and fill in with vein lines. Notice that the line drawings do not need to be precise!

Glue layers together and glue the heart onto the background paper with stem and leaves.

If desired, stamp word onto watercolor paper and glue in place on stem.

Place your finished artwork in frame.
